Paul Haugan studied with his primary teacher, Arnold M. Jacobs for over 20 years. Early on during these studies, Haugan indicated to Jacobs his interest in learning the art of Jacobs diagnostic and therapeutic teaching, and subsequent lessons not only focused on tubaplaying, but the steps and processes necessary to rehabilitate problems experienced universally by ALL brass players. With the permission of those studying, Haugan was a party to many of Jacobs` teaching sessions and lessons in Jacobs` studio, many times examining how Jacobs rescued longtime professional players from problems that had crippled their playing to the point of near hopelessness. Through observing Jacobs, and discussing with him at every opportunity the nature of rehabilitational teaching and the psychology behind successful and unsuccessful brass playing, Paul Haugan has attempted to retain as much as possible a working knowledge of Jacobs` own teaching tecniques and solutions to the problems advanced and professional brass players may encounter. In addition, Haugan has spent over 35 years as a professional tubaist, playing in orchestras and brass ensembles with such notable hornists as John Barrows, Hermann Baumann, Dale Clevenger, Bernhard Scully, Doug Hill, and others who he apoligizes for not mentioning.

"I was "kidnapped" by Clyde Beatty Cole Brothers circus at the age of 15 to play for it`s summer touring season - I barely escaped to finish High School". My baptism by fire into the "playing profession" as well as an insatiable desire for practice during my High School years was undoubtedly my ticket into the Nuremberg Philharmonic, a Class AA German Opera Orchestra, which I became a member of at the age of 18. After being named "runner up" (close only counts in horseshoes u. Handgrenaden) in the 1976 Berlin Philharmonic Tuba audition, I returned to Chicago to play with the Chicago Brass Ensemble and serve as tubaist in the NBC (Chicago) orchestra. During that time I also played with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as well as playing as an extra with Chicago`s Lyric Opera. The "emulator" sounded the death knell for "jingles"(commercial) work for the tuba, and I returned to my home town of Madison, Wisconsin to study Zoology at the University of Wisconsin. I was to return to Chicago for one last "hurrah" in 1980-81 and again played in the Civic Orchestra as well as sub with the Chicago Symphony. On one noteworthy occasion, Arnold Jacobs called me up in the morning and asked: "Paul, I don`t feel so well today, can you come in tonight and play "Pictures" [at an Exhibition] for me? Somehow this "trend" has managed to continue for me - the Milwaukee Symphony is notorious for calling me in at the last minute, once giving me 2 1/2 hours to drive to a "run-out" concert 3 hours drive away (I guess my Autobahn-trained driving has become noteworthy, too) and another time was woken up by a call to "get down to the hall" (30 minutes away) in a half hour for a rehearsal of Strauss` "Don Quixhote" with Yoyo Ma. I made it - with 5 minutes spare to warm up, to boot. Nothing like driving a retired police squad/detetive`s car for times like those.... I currently serve as "Principal Tuba" in four symphony orchestras: The "Madison Symphony Orchestra", the "Green Bay Symphony Orchestra", the "Rockford Symphony Orchestra", and also Milwaukee`s "Festival City Symphony". Seperately listing a myriad of brass quintets, bands, and numerous solo appearances and tours in the U.S. and Europe would seem frivolous and unnecessary, at this point. It should suffice to say that I have always kept a very active playing career, and I`m always looking for new and more challanging playing venues.

My specialty is dealing with severe playing problems and rehabilitating those in fear of losing their ability to play altogether. Through counseling and rehabilitative excercises, combined with a knowledge of respiratory physiology and the psychology involved in the successful playing brass instruments I am confident I can give assistance to those that may feel hopeless in regaining their ability to play. I also work with and coach those preparing for auditions, and have a thorough and intimate knowledge of Horn audition repetoire as well as that of other brasses.
