Questions

  1. Easy What is the name of the British composer who spent his World War II years in an U.K. prison. His composition(s) for horn have been commercially recorded. I will leave it to the musicologists amongst us to enlighten us if, in fact, the compositions we know so well were actually composed whilst in prison.

  2. What is the famous quotation of Dennis Brains' having to do with BuZZing. It was originally published in TIME Magazine in an article called "Young Man With a Horn" in the early 1950's. For a Hornist to be written up in Time Magazine was something of a first. Publications such as this usually only wrote about conductors, pianists, violinists and extremely well-known big band leaders. An article devoted to a hornist was unprecedented and helped to blaze the public relations trail for horn for which Dennis is still widely credited. As an aside, the article has a picture of Dennis sitting on an overstuffed couch, holding his Alexander, in his Frognal home's living room. Noteworthy is the fact that he looks extremely tired, with great dark bags under his eyes. It certainly gives the reader a contrast to the posed photographs of violinists, pianists and conductors which usually graced the pages of the magazine. Here is a man that really worked for the noteriety to be the first hornist featured in Time Magazine!

I have it on good authority, although I don't remember specifically since it has been years since I read the book, that Stephen Pettitt's book on Dennis Brain also quotes this article directly.

  3. -Difficult?-

  4. In July 1973, a major, general circulation, magazine published an article (the cover article at that!) on the Science of Brasses. With a picture of a horn on the cover, the public at large at their first glimpse, perhaps, in modern times, of how brasswind musical instrument actually worked. This type of article hitherto was the fodder of strictly technical journals with very limited interest and circulation. This burst of publicity did much to advance the public's understanding of the science of musical sound, even though as years went by some of the theory advanced in the article did not stand up to scientific examination. Still, this article should be checked out and read by everyone with an interest in the science behind the art.

    What was the article?
