Questions

The Instrument

  1. Famous Quote of a Famous Hornist:

"...the chances of accuracy are much greater if one knows that with a certain fingering a certain note will result, as with most other instruments, instead of being able to help oneself to half-a-dozen or so in the vicinity, with the same fingering."

Who said (wrote) this in an internationally distributed article?

  2. Once upon a time there was a (short lived) horn design that allowed, with no valves, the horn to be converted to any common key, without changing crooks. What was the name of this horn design? (After I had written this question, Prof. Pizka submitted much the same question for Significa. In order to utilize his efforts, the answer will be given in his narrative.)

  3. Describe the term stocking as it applies to a section (or accessory) of a modern horn. Or, in English, what is a stocking?

  4. Describe the term rotary switch. In other words, what is a rotary switch? How is it commonly used in a modern day instrument?

  5. What is the name of the modern (1933-1938) horn "system" that employed six valves, five of which could be used as ascending independent valves? The operation of the sixth, thumb, valve, changed the instrument to a descending, dependent one? Since there were several stages of highbred horns produced with this system that may not fit the above narrative and there are netpickers out there that would know this, I further hint that this horn was also known as the "Siegfried" horn. This is obviously because it is named after it's inventor, whose name wasn't Siegfried..

  6. Almost all hornists like to bandy about the terms large and small bore horns. Unfortunately, further clarification should take place before intelligent discussion can take place. Historically, the term bore can mean measured at the throat of the bell, the constant sized tubing in the middle of the horn, or even at the terminal size and taper of the mouthpipe (mouthpiece depth). For this question, the term bore is referring to both the mouthpipe terminal size and the diameter of the constant sized tubing in the middle section of the horn (whew!!!). Here, finally, is the question. Which is the bigger bore horn, one of the Double Conn, Yamaha, Kruspe family or a four or five valve single Bb Alexander?

  7. (Submitted by Prof. Pizka) Who was the first modern internationally known conductor from the circle of Richard Wagner who was also a horn player, played with Brahms and premiered The RING?

  8. In olden tymes, high horn specialists were known as cor-alto's and low horn specialists were known as cor-basse's. What was everyone else (middle-range) called?

  9. In English, his name would be Joe Green. What is the name of this famous composer?
