Questions
- Who was the hornist who played the obligato part in the first performance
of Mahler's 5th Symphony? (Hint: initials are MH)
- We all know of the recording of an early (1957) Hoffnung Music Festival
at which Dennis Brain played Leopold Mozart on a garden hose. This feat was
repeated at the 1971 HMF with another famous hornist at the hosepipe. Who
was he? (Hint: Initials are AL) (New Hint: He is not British)
- No doubt related to the confirmed announcement that Barry Tuckwell is
retiring from his position as a touring horn soloist, another Brit has
announced that he will seek that position and lifestyle and has resigned from
his first chair horn position in a major London orchestra to punctuate this
fact. In an effort to familiarize hornlisters with him and wish him well,
identify him? What orchestra did he resign from to start this venture?
(Hint: Initials are RW)
- A seven minute horn quartet named "Stately Horns" has recently been
recorded with Michael Thompson, Richard Watkins, Richard Bissell and John
Pigneguy playing. Who composed "Stately Horns."
- What is the name of the renown professor who had players practicing the
solo from Till Eulenspiegel "upside-down?"
- As we all know, horns are frequently named after their creators,
collaborators, designers or a player who has a affiliation with the
manufacturer. The horn I am thinking of was named after a former first chair
hornist of the Boston Symphony. Uh oh, already I can see this is a lousy
question with three or more possible correct answers so I was further
disclose that THIS player was Kruspe's nephew. At the time of his tenure the
entire horn section of the BSO was made to play on this model instrument
(pretty good since the player made money on each that was sold). What is the
make/model of this horn?
- Name the composer of the horn sonata that was written between September
1952 and January 1953 for George Hyde (well known Hollywood hornist,
composer, conductor). Mr. Hyde premiered it at USC March 16 1953. It was
later commercially recorded by James Decker (Hollywood Superhornist/teacher).
This recording was supervised by the composer and was made possible through
a Mellon Foundation grant, ERS 6505. It is no longer available. Mr. Decker
informs me that the tempo readings in the recording were not the ones
originally written. The composer explained that he wrote the piano part so
he could play it therefore the tempos marked were slower.
- Famous Quote from a famous conductor:
"When I was a young man I played the violin. But that was too difficult
so I changed to viola. And then when that became too hard I became a
conductor. But if I had it all to do over again I would be a music critic
because they don't have to know anything!"
OK BrainOphiles. The next two are trick questions. Everyone has a chance at
getting it right. It is multiple choice. Beware, do not use deductive
reasoning or you will miss them. Everyone can guess.
