  1. Everyone knows that the great American hornist and teacher Phil Farkas had a long association with a certain musical instrument maker. This association blossomed when he "revolutionized" horn design with his Farkas Model #77 Horn. There were many good features to these horns, one of which was a production horn with independent tuning for both F and Bb horn which was quite a departure from the standard 2 slides for both horns and 1 slide for the F horn alone found on most "full" doubles. Farkas' highly successful association with this one manufacturer has obscured the fact that he had a prior affiliation with another musical instrument maker. Question: Who was Phil Farkas affiliated with (agent for) before Holton. (Ha Ha, Fooled you)

    Conn

  2. In my everlasting attempt to keep gross subjectivity out of my trivia, I have thought up one question that I don't think anyone will debate. The hornist I am thinking of is renowned for one quality above all others. He is the most cruciferous hornist in all the land. Who is he?

BW (Shear-Luck) Holmes AKA Cabbage--(Cabbage is a member of the Cruciferous Plant Family)

  3. In Breaking the Endurance Barrier, Woodwind World, May 1958, Joseph Eger made a comparison of the exploits of the famous Olympic athlete, Roger Bannister with a famous European hornist. You do not have to resurrect the quote exactly, although everyone should have knowledge of this remark. In 99 words or less, who was the European hornist and what was Joseph Eger talking about?

Dennis Brain-In short, Mr. Eger compared Dennis Brains' accomplishment to have the horn recognized as a legitimate solo instrument without the inherent fear of clunks and clams (a well known seafood dish, I believe) with Mr. Bannister's breaking of the "four minute mile." Once the barrier was broken, many followed. This is a very famous article in Hornlore, all should familiarize themselves with it.

  4. I just ran across this in my files after I had completed trivia #6. I am inserting it here in the hopes that it is timely with the list's ongoing banter regarding Breath Attacks. See if you can figure out who the hornist is.

"When he [Leopold Stowkowski] once adjured _______________ to play a passage softer, ___________, after several tries, rose, brandished his horn and said.'There are sixteen feet of pipe in this, and if I don't blow in, nothing comes out.' That closed the matter."

    Anton Horner

If this hapless player had been on the net, we could have instructed him in the diligent use of a tasteful, breath attack, don't you think? Maybe the anti-BA'rs got to him! (NP'ers-This is not really a question)

  5. Non-Horn Bonus Question.

It is well known that Conductors often change their names.
    Who are these people.

    • Bruno Schlesinger

      Bruno Walter

    • Paul Felix

      Felix Weingartner
