ANSWERS

  1. Who was the hornist who played the obligato part in the first performance of Mahler's 5th Symphony? (Hint: initials are MH)

Correct answer as given by the amazing Robert Pyle: Max Hess (Mahler 5 in Cologne, 1905, on a single F horn! He came to Boston the next year, played in Boston and Cincinnati (?), then retired to the Boston area; I found out he was still alive in a nursing home about 20 miles from me about two weeks before he died in his late 90s. Darn. Would have been interesting to talk to him.)

Mr. Hess was a confirmed single horn user but was known to own and play "single" horns in keys other than F. For instance, he also played a single horn (Bopp) in Bb during his career. WH

No doubt related to the confirmed announcement that Barry Tuckwell is retiring from his position as a touring horn soloist, another Brit has announced that he will seek that position and lifestyle and has resigned from his first chair horn position in a major London orchestra to punctuate this fact. 6. As we all know, horns are frequently named after their creators, collaborators, designers or a player who has a affiliation with the manufacturer. The horn I am thinking of was named after a former first chair hornist of the Boston Symphony. Uh oh, already I can see this is a lousy question with three or more possible correct answers so I was further disclose that THIS player was Kruspe's nephew. At the time of his tenure the entire horn section of the BSO was made to play on this model instrument (pretty good since the player made money on each that was sold). What is the make/model of this horn?

    Kruspe/Wendler

  7. Name the composer of the horn sonata that was written between September 1952 and January 1953 for George Hyde (well known Hollywood hornist, composer, conductor). Mr. Hyde premiered it at USC March 16 1953. It was later commercially recorded by James Decker (Hollywood Superhornist/teacher). This recording was supervised by the composer and was made possible through a Mellon Foundation grant, ERS 6505. It is no longer available. Mr. Decker informs me that the tempo readings in the recording were not the ones originally written. The composer explained that he wrote the piano part so he could play it therefore the tempos marked were slower.

  8. Famous Quote from a famous conductor:

"When I was a young man I played the violin. But that was too difficult so I changed to viola. And then when that became too hard I became a conductor. But if I had it all to do over again I would be a music critic because they don't have to know anything!"

Editorial: Why is it that in comparison to the first five or so Trivias/Significa's, everyone knows so much more now? Are our horn professors teaching more hornlore? Are listers cracking the books? Are my questions any different? I would sure like to know the explanation for all of this.

The name "Significa" was the brain (no pun intended)child of John McCoy.
