Good playing four valve single Bb horn from 1952. It plays well in tune. The sound is clear and strongly focused. Response is very fast and easy. Requires relatively little effort to play. Favors the upper register, but plays clearly and in tune into the lower register as well. The thumb valve is for stopped horn transposition, to improve certain fingering combinations, and to provide an otherwise missing written low Bb (Eb concert). Use for A/E horn transposition or for open F horn notes would require construction of alternate slides and/or other modifications.
CONDITION: When I got the horn, the original leadpipe had been replaced with an improvised piece of unknown make. It played sort of in tune with a rather dull sound. I have replaced that with a Holton H-650 leadpipe, the only Bb pipe readily available from Selmer (see photos). Like many older Holton horns, the bore on this is .464" (11.8 mm) rather than the more common .468" (11.9 mm).
I have removed all structural dents - there are marks at the sites of the deepest dents. Added an Amado (push-button type) water key to the leadpipe.
Did a valve adjustment job. Valves are now tight and quiet. Compression is adequate to center the sound well over the full range, but valves don't pop like new. Further improvement would require a full rebuild job.
The horn appears to have been relacqered at least once. Lacquer has been lost over about 30% of the body, due to repairs and normal wear.
CASE: Comes in a decent aftermarket ABS plastic case in generally good condition. It is well padded, including a support block and large compression cushion. The handle is a replacement. All latches and hinges are in good working order.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS:
1) I can strip the remaining lacquer and polish, but I do not have facilities to relacquer.
2) Numerous standard mouthpieces available from $15-40.
