Good playing single F horn with a surprisingly big and resonant sound. Tuning is very good. Plays well with a wide variety of mouthpieces. Full size wrap, so a good choice for a middle school or older student or for an adult amateur. Nickel-silver lead pipe, slide sleeves, and ferrules; balance of the horn is yellow brass.
CONDITION: This former school horn has been well maintained, but it's 40 years old. It came to me with moderate denting and generally in need of an overhaul. I have removed all structural dents - there are marks where the deepest dents were. I installed one patch about 1.5" x .5" on the inside of the bell flare. Also installed an Amado water key on the lead pipe.
After an adjustment job, valve compression is good enough to center the sound well throughout the range, but valves don't pop like new.
The horn has been re-lacquered at least once, but still has lost lacquer over about 40% of the surface. I have polished exposed brass as best I can to even out appearance. If you intend to keep the horn for an extended time, stripping the remaining lacquer and polishing will reduce pitting and even out the finish.
CASE: Comes in a decent ABS plastic after-market case with support block and plastic strap, but no compression cushion. Handle and all latches work.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS:
1) I can strip all remaining lacquer for extra cost. However I do not have facilities to re-lacquer.
2) Numerous standard mouthpieces available from $15-40.
HISTORY: Serial number dates production to 1968 in Abilene, TX. This appears to be basically the F side of a Pottag model FE04 double horn. The bell is a medium bore taper, but the lead pipe has the characteristic Reynolds rapid flare. The layout is distinctive, with separate tuning and "dump" slides, similar in function to the Conn 4D. It was produced mostly in the Abilene factory; although I have seen one from Cleveland. The Contempora was Reynolds' premium line. In the 1970's, Norlin, Reynolds parent company, dropped the Contempora single horn line, but kept the Contempora double horns. Only the Emperor single was sold, the same horn as the Olds Ambassador, produced in the Fullerton, CA factory. See www.contemporacorner.com for more information.
