Music for Horn and Organ

I have twice now asked for suggestions for Horn and Organ works. I have finally found time to compile the suggestions and, at the request of others, am posting the results here. they have been roughly edited, any comments are those of the hornist who sent the title.

  • Corelli: Sonata in g minor
  • Cesare: La Hireonyma
  • Tuthill: Prelude for Horn and Organ
  • Purcell: Allemande
  • Faust: Celebration
  • Pepusch: Sonata IV in c minor
  • Read: De Profundis, Op. 71
  • Bernhard Krol: Missa Muta
  • Ravanello: Meditazione
  • Badings: Cazone
  • Scheck: Kleine Partita
  • Woehrmann: Chorale Prelude: Jesus Loves Me
  • Marks: Choral Partita: Jesu, Meine Freude
  • Andante by Goerge Hoeberg (a rather easy piece, but lovely), Pie Jesu from the Faure Requiem (I believe it is published by Fentone for horn and piano, but it works just as well with organ).
  • August Korling entitled Pastorale
  • Eric Honneker's Prayer of Saint Gregory.
  • Kaddish by Lev Kogan. It's an extremely evocative melody for unaccompanied horn.
  • Hugo Alfven, Notturno Elegiaco. Carl Gehrmans Musikforlag, Stockholm, 1952.
  • A horn player in my brass ensemble did the Franz Strauss Nocturno with organ when we were on tour.
  • Saint-Saens Romance with organ
  • Chris, I don't know if you have this cd; it could help you find some repertoire you like. It's called "Konzert in der Weis" on Christophorus. 17 tracks...all the Horn and Organ you can handle!
  • There is a rather new piece for two horns and organ, Concerto #16 by Handel arranged by Kendall Betts of the Minnesota Orchestra. It is available from Corenfa Publications, 515 Ontario St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414, 612-331-2696. It is very good and was played at the IHS conference in Tallahassee (Betts and Chuck Kavalovski) but difficult. two pieces by Charles Callahan, published by Morningstar: Adoro te (also includes cello part) and Lenten Meditation.
  • There is also a very interesting piece by Saint-Saens called Andante recently published by Rare Brass-Gabrieli edition.
  • I recently played the Hovanness "Prayer of St. Gregory" to substantial audience apporval. It's a lovely horn (trumpet) and organ piece.
  • Look at the pieces by Randall Faust, His celebration is a great "wake em up" as a Prelude or postlude.
  • If you are in to 20th century works try the Ernst Krenek op.239.
  • There is also a set of Bach arias which has been transcribed and work well.
  • Many of the Baroque works for D or picc trumpet play well on horn, if you are comfortable with the transposition. Try the "standards" first (examples: the Clark Voluntaries, the Vivaldi for two trumpets) and then check out the Albinonis and Corellis. Since trumpeters are so comfortable borrowing oboe literature, I don't see why we sould shy from borrowing trumpet stuff. Hey, how would oboe stuff work on horn?
  • I would also like to add: A book of 8 choral preludes bu Krebs, for Trumpet and organ but can be played by horn.
I have been reading the archive from the horn mailing list and was particularly interested in the Horn/Organ repertoire list. I would appreciate it if you could add one of my works to the list:

John Jay Hilfiger PRELUDE ON "HYFRYDOL" pub. by Wehr's Music House, 1998.

It is based on a hymn tune and is especially good for use in church.

Wehr's Music House has a web page at:

if you need more information.

Thanks,

Jay Hilfiger
