Vibrato (2)

Vibrato in auditions ?
Well, thatīs the best way to camouflage your nervosity & the best way to lose the audition.

Did you ever listen to a tape at low speed ? Listened to the whaouooo-whaouuu of the vibrato ? Everything out of tune ?

Well, if you dont care about intonation, do vibrate.

Brahms no.1 with vibrato, why ??? If you have no sound, yes, you might enforce your "petit" sound with vibrato, but lose the audition anyway.

Solo: a different case.

I have to agree with Prof. Pizka.

There are standard ways to play orchestral works, particularly in an audition. Since the majority of us will be playing in American orchestras, I would conclude that vibrato in an audition would be a fast ticket back home. No matter how good your playing/vibrato is, if it isn't stylistically correct for the orchestra, you won't get the gig.

Solo playing is a different animal. Solo repetoire is about playing the music in a way that is your own interpretation, not that of a conductor.

Traditionally, the horn has no vibrato, like a clarinet. Vibrato is just one of many colors that is available on the palette.

I normally do not use vibrato. I tried it some on the jazz portion of my CD, but was not happy with the results and replaced those passages. Where it is most handy is when playing with a woodwind quintet when the clarinet and basson rarely agree on intonation. Then, using mild vibrato bridges the gap

A horn player friend of mine, Rich Hein, has worked out a method for quintettes to stay perfectly in tune, based on resultants. He explains the method on his web page http://www.heincomputing.com/precise2.htm.

Dear Hans and bunch,

A lot of horn players - really good players DO use vibrato. I use it and do so like a singer does. When I wanted to learn how to do it - from Morris Secon at Eastman - he had me do it to a metronome, 2 to a beat then 3, then 4 etc. to gain control and he was always insistant that I be able to play any given passage without any vibrato at all. I find I can warm my sound with it when I wish and BLEND with another instrument that is using a vibrato bt matching my vibrato with theirs. That using a vibrato is just a device to cover a shortcoming is absurd!! And a little closeminded and insulting don't you think?
