Homilius

Craig B.Parker was wrong in his answer about the bio-datas of HOMILIUS, as he has mistakingly reported the biography of Gottfried August Homilius and not Friedrich HOMILIUS. G.A.Homilius was an important composer of the baroque area, but here the biography of Friedrich Hoimilius, the horn player, was asked for.

Friedrich Constantin HOMILIUS, born Oct.15th, 1813 in Saxonia, horn student of MOSCHKE (Mikesch) & cello student of F.A.Kummer in Dresden; he played first horn in a military band in Dresden 1830 -38; he moved to St.Petersburg 1838, where he became principal horn player in the Russian Imperial Opera Theatre (Marianski Theatre) & remained in this position until 1876; he also taught horn at the Conservatory from 1870 - 1899 and served as director of the Philharmonic Society for 25 years. Homilius recruited many students from far away including the Baltic Countries as Estonia, Lithuania & Latvia, among whom Jan Tamm became a leading figure later. Homilius performed C.M.v.weber's concertino e-minor op.45 1847 in St.Petersburg.

Homilius' s son Louis, born May 25th, 1845 in St.Petersburg, became a well known musician also. He studied with Anton Rubinstein and Davidov (cello), served as cellist for some years in the Imperial Opera & became professor for organ at the conservatory.
