Horn .............. general name for a certain type of "Brass" instruments, which
derive from the mostly conical animals horn, like cow horns. This term is used
for the horn in the orchestra, which also can be used for solo, for ensemble,
etc. The same term can be used for natural horns, hunting horns, valved horns of
any type from single F to high F/high Bb soprano or triple & quadruple horn as
well.
Waldhorn ........... also a term used for the same instruments as above, but this
term is not in (general use) any more, except with amateur groups, who think to
do all better than the professionals (no offense, but true in many cases). The
term "valthorn" is used in Russian language the same way.
Naturhorn ........... the handhorn, the natural horn of the classic epoque, the
natural horn of the baroque epoque as well as of the 19th century (like in
France)
Jagdhorn ............ the hunting horn
Ventilhorn or Ventil-Horn .... the valved horn, but this term is out of use. It
was created during the first half of the 19th century to distinguish between the
(natural) horn and the (valved) horn, which both were used together, like in
Wagners opera "Rienzi".
"Scheisshorn" ....... name given to ones own instrument or to their players
instrument by conductors, amateurs, professionals, .... if they got problems.
"Wunderhorn" ........ if the same people discovered a new instrument or a new
player, but it became a "Scheisshorn" again after one or two months (you might
guess, whos fault it was !).
"(Weg)Schmeisshorn" ...... "throw (away) horn", ask Kendall Betts about more
details.
"Nebelhorn" .........Fog horn, a certain sound, heard too often even from
professionals. The very distinguished uncentered dark & obscure sound.
"Alphorn" ...........Alpine horn, which looks like a long pipe, but has nothing
to do with the bad habit of smoking. It takes a lot of breath, but sounds
beautiful. The name has nothing to do with a "nightmare" (Alp), but with the
"Alps" (a long chain of mountains, deviding the Mediterranean zone from the rest
of Europe, a result of the African plate pushing against the European plate).
This instrument can be found in various forms everywhere in the world, where the
habe mountains. It can be found in the flat land also, as it became a favorite
instrument in the IHS.
"lesni roh" ....... horn in Czech language
"lesni rog" ....... in Polish language
"valthorn" ........ in Russian language
"horun" ........... in Japanese
"yuen hao" ........ in Chinese
If one quotes the translations in different languages, it might be better, to
quote the general term for horn, not all terms like "claxton" etc. as these terms
are used for "special instruments" not the "horn" in general.
Angelo Bernicchio, owner of KALISON in Milan, is an excellent horn designer &
engineer. Besides that, he is a very friendly man. KALISON has designed several
different horns from simple F-horns or smaller coiled "Kinder-Horns" to
compensating F-Bb, full double & descant horns. Im not sure, if they produce a
triple. The design of Bb-high F is similar to one horn produced by Paxman. I
should comment here, that KALISON, as a biiger factory, produces parts for other
makers (!). They also produce a fine hunting horn & Wagner-Tubas of various
designs including a double tuba in F/Bb. Comment: A double tuba loses all the
single sound characteristika of the single instruments. The KALISON instruments
are a very good bargain as they combine reasonable high quality with very
reasonable low prices. The valve action is excellent. Some KALISON instruments
are prepared for exchangeable leadpipes by an unique feature. The screw bells are
fixed by an excellent bayonet type screw.
