Music for Horn, Clarinet and Piano
|
|
Carl Reinecke has written a trio for such and it is appropriately titled
Trio for Horn Clarinet & Piano. I believe it is published by
International. I have never actually played it, so I can't tell you much
about it.
|
The Rochberg Trio is a really nice piece written for this combo. If you
feeling really adventurous, check out the Mendelssohn Concertpiece (Op.
112, 113 or 114 .. I forget). The basset horn part is in F, and with much
diligence, it can be an effective showpiece.
Not for the faint of heart (or technique) ...

Don't neglect the Gunther Schuller trio. It's a real challenge and
interesting to listen too. It's published by Margun Music, Jim Decker

I purchased a Trio by Duvernoy originally for Horn, Violin and Piano that
has an alternate part for clarinet from Klaas Weelinck about twenty years
ago - Edition Ka We (No. 81). Perhaps Hans Pizka has the rights to this
catalog. It was actually called "2nd Trio" I do not know anything about a
first one.

Hi all,
I'm looking for recommendations for chamber music for horn, clarinet and
maybe one or two other instruments (except bassoon - shortage of players!)
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Robin

If you are willing to include a singer,
you might consider a piece I wrote,
Three Songs for high voice, clarinet,
and soprano. Texts of E. E. Cummings,
Theodore Roethke, and May Swenson.
The duration is eight to nine minutes.
The songs are fairly bleak, since they
were written in response to the suicide
of a friend.
Send me your address if you would care to look
at them.
gotta go,

You might try these that my clarinet friend and I are working on:
Horn and Clarinet:
- Ignace Dobrzynski: Duo for Clarinet and Horn. This one is very easy and
pleasant. Also very short. Hans Pizka Edition.
- Georg Friedrich Fuchs, Duo for Clarinet and Horn, Opus 5. Not difficult,
pleasant. Watch out for the missing notes in movt. 3. Henry Litolff's
Verlag. I think I bought this one from Hans Pizka Edition as well.
- Jan Mackovecky: Duo concertant No. 1 for Horn & Viola (Clarinet), arr. by
Klaas Weelink. Has a few c2's to contend with, but they are in major scale
runs. This one is quite challenging, too. Hans Pizka Edition.
Horn, Clarinet and Piano:
- Max Bruch: Trios for Viola, Horn and Piano. Viola is transcribed for Horn
in the Hans Pizka Edition publication. These come in two sets 1-4 and 5-8.
They are relatively challenging, but very beautiful music.
- Gunther Schuller: Romantic Sonata for Clarinet, Horn and Piano. I find this
one quite difficult, especially the rhythms. (Nested triplets, quintuplet
against triplet, etc. Weird stuff.) Published by Margun Music, (617)
332-6398.
- Alec Wilder: Suite for Clarinet, Horn and Piano. 4 movements. This is a
bit easier with a hint of jazzy feeling. Again, Margun Music.

How about the Reinecke trio Op174 for Horn Clarinet and piano, it is
terrific and there is a great copy of the Dallas Winds (Hustis, horn)
playing it.

Six Duos for Cor & Clarinette by Georges Fuchs (classical) are available
from David Goldberg or the Horn List. He posted his offer a year or so ago.
Contact David directly for information.

Isn't there a Telemann concerto for winds?

Hi Robin,
I have in front of me now (quite by chance) a copy of the Overture (Suite)
for two clarinets and horn by Handel - it's in 4 movts and is a little
masterpiece! It's published by Schott. I also have a recording of it
apparently performed by Dennis Brain, although there were no credits on the
record. A bit of it sounds like the Queen of Sheba,
All the best,
Lawrence

Robert King lists a trio for horn, clarinet and piano by Carl Reinecke:
Trio Op. 274
ed. by Davis (WIM) #0005126
I have performed this a couple of times. It is a beautiful work in the
Romantic Style.

I seem to remember an article in the Horn Call a while back (over a year
ago) that listed something on the order of several hundred pieces. They all
had clarinet and horn, and many of them contained other instruments. I can't
find the issue right now, but I'm sure that someone would know. If you know
anyone that's been getting the journal for several years and has them all in
one place, unlike me, you could go through them and find the article. Good
luck!

There is a gorgeous trio for horn, clarinet, and piano
by Carl Reinecke. King should list it.

Two pieces I've always enjoyed doing ( if you have a good pianist around) are the tros by Carl Reinecke and George Rochberg. The audience seems to like them, too! Good luck.

Robin Moffat asks for chamber music for horn, clarinet and one or two other
instruments. Not quite within these parameters but worth considering if you
know a good string 4tet is Lennox Berkley's Sextet (Hn, Cl, String 4t)
published by Chester. The music is IMO more satisfying than the same
composers Horn Trio and the horn part is not too taxing which makes the
piece easy to programme in a horn oriented chamber concert.

This is a follow-up to my request a while back for horn and clarinet music (FWIW I have bought the Reinecke and will be working on it next term as another part of the project I describe below)
The awkward part of this request is that the piece must be 'modern'. This, I hasten to add, is not my choice but a pre-requesite for the assesment of a particular project I am taking part in at university. For example, last term I did this project and playing the Xenakis trio linia-agon for horn, trombone and tuba. I am looking for some similar kind of music, but for Horn and Clarinet. Ideally it would be a trio or quartet, and I have a flute and piano available, and if needed could find an oboe. If it came to the worst I could do a duet with the clarinet.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Robin

I have in my personal library a copy of a "Divertimento for Clarinet, Horn,
and Piano" by Elliott Schwartz, dating from 1965. Though certainly not as
gratingly modern as Xenakis, it is not painfully conservative. It is a
four-
movement work, with the piano tacet for the third movement.

Besides the Wilder already mentioned, I'd suggest the Gunther Schuller
"Romantic Sonata for Clarinet, Horn and Piano". It's definitely modern and
is pretty challenging rhythmically. My trio really likes it. Published by
Margun Music.

Hello, Robin
There's a suite called Joie d'un somethingorother (klarinett?) by
some Fench composer; written very recently, I think. Some of the
pieces are for horn alone, some clarinet alone, and I *think*
there's one for horn + clarinet. I'm sorry I don't completely recall
the title (or the composer for that matter), but though you'd rather
have a little info than nothing!
regards,
Richard

For anyone who hasn't heard or played it, the Alec Wilder Suite for
Clarinet, Horn and Piano is a wonderful work. It has a sort of light jazz
feel to it. It is challenging and rewarding at the same time. Highly
recomended.
